    - General Guidelines -

    Material Handling and Storage
Store vinyl sheet rolls standing on end, with capped end down. Do not lay flat. Protect rolls from extreme temperature ranges. Do not expose to very hot or very cold temperatures. Deliver all materials to the job site at least 48 hours in advance to allow for acclimation to job site temperature and humidity (this should be between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit). To make the installation easier, roll material face in after cutting the sheets for a job. It may also be helpful to lay sheets out over night, flat on the floor, in the area where they are to be installed.

    Floor Preparation
Great care must be taken to assure a smooth substrate before installing any vinyl floor. Please refer to the Floor 2 Ceiling Floor Preparation Guide for instructions on surface preparation.

    - Adhering Sincol Commercial Sheet Vinyl -

    Porous or Non-porous
A non-porous substrate is one which does not absorb water. If you are not sure whether a floor is porous or non-porous, sprinkle some water on the floor. If the water beads up, then it’s a non-porous floor. If it soaks in, it’s a porous floor. Use a small amount of water for the test, and allow the floor to completely dry before continuing. If a bare concrete floor is not porous, a sealer or curing compound may have been used. Such treatments shall be removed before installing a new floor or under-layment, and the floor tested for porosity at that time. For more information, refer to the Sincol Floor Preparation Guide.

Adhesive Recommendations For Sincol Commercial Sheet Vinyl
All Sincol Commercial sheet vinyl shall be installed using Sincol adhesive. This product can be used over porous and non-porous surfaces, according to the following guidelines:

    • Sheet Vinyl over Porous Floors
Spread rate: 150 sq. ft. per gallon. Use a 1/16” x 1/16” s 1/16” square notched trowel. Set material into adhesive 10-15 minutes after spreading adhesive. The adhesive will still be wet at this time.
    • Sheet Vinyl over Non-porous Floors
Spread rate: 200 sq. ft. per gallon. Use a 1/6” V-notch trowel. Allow adhesive to become “tacky” before setting material into adhesive. This should take about 20-30 minutes depending on the humidity and temperature. Spread adhesive evenly. Do not allow puddles or lumps of adhesive to form.

    After Setting Flooring into Adhesive
Roll floor in both directions using a 100 pound roller. When installing sheet vinyl with chemically sealed seams, seal seams of sheet vinyl after 2-3 hours, or after adhesive has hardened, using Sincol PL-88 cold weld seam sealer. When installing sheet vinyl with heat welded seams, heat weld seams the following day using Sincol welding thread. Keep foot traffic off the new floor for 12 hours. Keep furniture, fixtures, and rolling traffic off the floor for 24 hours. For the first 7 days, if floor must be cleaned, damp mop only. After 7 days, strip and polish floor according to Sincol Commercial Sheet Vinyl Maintenance Guide.

    - Seaming Sincol Sheet Vinyl -

All seams must be sealed by heat weld or cold weld method.
Use as few seams as possible. Make short seams rather than long seams and place seams in low traffic areas. Avoid cross seams whenever possible. The cost of additional material needed to avoid cross seams may be offset by reduced labor cost and a neater looking installation. All seams must be trimmed as part of the installation process. Do not butt factory edges. For patterned material, trim the seams so as to match the design. Cut seams “net”. Do not leave a gap at the seam, and do not cut the seam so tight that the material peaks.

The best way to achieve this is the “double cut” method, although the “recess scribe” method is also acceptable. Use a straightedge and a sharp knife to cut down the center of overlap. Hold the knife at a right angle to the floor. Fold the sheets back and spread adhesive in the seam area. Warning: When setting sheets into adhesive, do not allow adhesive to penetrate the seam. This will contaminate the sealer and cause failure. After the sheets are adhered, hand roll the seam area, then roll with a 100-pound roller.

Sincol Commercial Sheet Vinyl Heat Weld
The heat weld method is the strongest of all seam methods. Heat weld seams are recommended for health care installations and other high traffic areas and floors subject to heavy rolling loads or excessive surface moisture. Install the flooring, including the seams. Seam cutting is easily done using the double cut method. Do not leave a gap at the seam. Fit seam net but not so tight that the material “peaks”. The adhesive must be fully set before heat welding. Wait overnight before grooving and heat welding. Groove the seams using a mechanical or hand grower to accept a 3 mm welding rod.

Be sure to center the groove on the seam so that both sides are equally grooved. The groove should be calibrated to cut approximately two-thirds down through the material. Apply welding tread using a hot air gun with a 2.5 mm or 3mm nozzle tip. Allow welding thread to cool for about 20 minutes. Trim the welding thread using a trim knife with a trim plate attached. Trim the remaining welding tread flush to the surface of the floor using the trim knife without trim plate.

    Optional Glazing
Remove the tip from the welding gun. Apply hot air only to surface of the weld until the surface becomes slightly glossy. This “glazing” process will make the surface of the weld smoother, and help the weld blend in better by slightly darkening the color.
